The Mushroom
Getting to know Cordyceps
What is Cordyceps?
Cordyceps is actually a group of fungi, and there is more than one species behind the name you see on a supplement label.
The Cordyceps many people have heard stories about is Ophiocordyceps sinensis, the rare caterpillar fungus found at high altitudes in Asia. Wild O. sinensis is difficult to harvest and exceptionally expensive. The species we use is Cordyceps militaris, known for its distinctive orange fruiting bodies and its ability to be cultivated commercially.
Today, Cordyceps supplements can differ considerably in species, source material, processing and concentration. That is why it is worth looking beyond “Cordyceps” on the front of the bottle and checking exactly what is inside.
Why Cordyceps?
For days with somewhere to go.
Cordyceps has long been associated with vitality and physical activity. You will find it in the routines of runners and gym regulars, but also in the daily regimens of people who simply have a lot they want to fit into a day.
You do not need to be training for something to make Cordyceps part of your routine. Eversio Cordyceps provides antioxidants that help protect cells against oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
Why an 8:1 Extract?
A mushroom powder and a mushroom extract can start with the same fruiting body, but they are not the same thing.
Our Cordyceps starts with Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies. We use hot water to break down the mushroom and extract water-soluble compounds, including beta-glucans. For Cordyceps, we use a single hot-water extraction rather than the dual extraction process we use for mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Chaga.
We then concentrate the extract to an 8:1 ratio. That means eight parts dried Cordyceps are used to produce one part concentrated extract.
Not every mushroom needs the same extraction process. We choose the method based on the specific mushroom and what we want to extract from it.
Mushroom Math
What does 8:1 actually mean?
An extract ratio tells you how much dried mushroom was used to make the finished extract.
For Cordyceps, 8:1 means 8 grams of dried Cordyceps are used to produce 1 gram of extract.
Two capsules contain 1,000 mg of concentrated extract, with a Quantity Crude Equivalent (QCE) of 8,000 mg.
That does not mean there are physically 8,000 mg packed into the capsules. It means the 1,000 mg of concentrated extract was made using the equivalent of 8,000 mg of dried Cordyceps.
| Per 2 capsules | Eversio Cordyceps | 1:1 Cordyceps Powder |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | 1,000 mg | 1,000 mg |
| Extract Ratio | 8:1 | 1:1 |
| Dried Equivalent (QCE) | 8,000 mg | 1,000 mg |

The Difference
What are fruiting bodies and mycelium?
Mushrooms have two main structures, and understanding the difference can make supplement labels much easier to read.
Mycelium
The network the mushroom grows from. Mycelium is made up of fine, thread-like structures called hyphae that grow through a food source.
Fruiting Body
The part we recognize as the mushroom. In Cordyceps militaris, these are the distinctive orange structures that grow above the surface.
Think of an apple tree
The tree, roots and all → that’s the mycelium
The apple → that’s the fruiting body
Neither is inherently better simply because it is mycelium or fruiting body. What matters is knowing which part is in your supplement and what else may be present with it.
Where grain substrate comes in
Mycelium is sometimes cultivated on grains such as rice or oats. As the mycelium grows, its thread-like network spreads through and becomes intertwined with the grain substrate, making the two difficult to separate. Because of this, the cultivated material is typically harvested as a whole. The mycelium and grain substrate are processed together, so grain remains in the finished ingredient.
This is why Eversio uses the fruiting body. It gives us a clearly defined starting material made from the mushroom itself, without grain substrate being carried into the extract.

The Eversio Experience Podcast
Cordyceps Mushroom Masterclass
Few functional mushrooms come with a story quite like Cordyceps.
In this episode, Brandi and Dr. Desiree take a deeper look at the Cordyceps family, including the difference between Cordyceps militaris and Ophiocordyceps sinensis, why Eversio uses C. militaris fruiting bodies, and some of the research that has made Cordyceps such an interesting mushroom in conversations around active lifestyles and physical performance.
They also explore what to look for in a Cordyceps supplement, from species and source material to extraction and beta-glucan content.

Why Beta-Glucans Matter
Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in the cell walls of mushrooms. They are one of the useful markers we can measure when evaluating a mushroom extract.
Not all polysaccharides are beta-glucans. This distinction matters when comparing mushroom supplements because other ingredients, including grain substrate, can contribute to a total polysaccharide measurement. A high total polysaccharide number does not necessarily tell you how much of the product is mushroom beta-glucan.
That is why we disclose beta-glucans specifically, rather than relying on total polysaccharides.
Eversio Cordyceps is standardized to 25% beta-D-glucans, verified batch by batch.

The Ritual
Your Daily Cordyceps
Cordyceps has a reputation for being the mushroom you take before doing something, but it shouldn’t need to be reserved for workout days, long hikes or especially ambitious mornings. Like most things you make part of your wellness routine, it’s the consistency that counts.
Pair it
With something already in your day. Your morning coffee, breakfast, or getting ready to head out.
Take it
Two capsules, once daily. Many people prefer Cordyceps earlier in the day, whether that’s with breakfast, before a workout, or in the early afternoon.
Go where the day takes you
No measuring, mixing or complicated schedule. Just two capsules and the rest of the day is yours.
Cordyceps doesn’t need to become another thing to manage. Give it a place in the routine you already have.
